Dress for Success: The Ultimate Guide to Choosing Outfits for Your Corporate Headshot

July 01, 20263 min read

When it comes to your professional image, first impressions happen in the blink of an eye. Whether someone is viewing your LinkedIn profile, your company’s “About Us” page, or a media release, your portrait speaks before you do.

As a professional photographer with over 10 years of experience shooting portraits across South East Queensland, the number one question I get asked before a session is:“Martin, what on earth should I wear?”

It’s a valid question. The right outfit can boost your confidence, complement your skin tone, and align perfectly with your industry’s standards. The wrong outfit can distract from your face, create weird optical illusions on camera, and dates your photo instantly.

To ensure you look sharp, professional, and approachable, here is my ultimate guide to planning your wardrobe for your next portrait session.

1. Stick to Solid, Mid-Tone Colors

When a potential client looks at your headshot, you want their eyes to go straight to your face and your smile—not your clothes.

  • The Winners:Solid jewel tones (emerald green, sapphire blue, ruby), classic navy, charcoal grey, and rich chocolate browns photograph beautifully on almost everyone.

  • The Losers:Bright, neon colors can bounce unwanted color reflections up under your chin. Solid, stark white can bleed out under professional studio lights, while solid jet black can sometimes swallow up detail and look heavy unless paired with a contrasting jacket.

2. Beware the “Moiré Effect” (Avoid Fine Patterns)

This is a technical rule that many people learn the hard way. Avoid shirts, jackets, or ties with tightly woven patterns, thin stripes, small houndstooth, or fine checkers.

On digital screens, these micro-patterns create a jarring, dizzying optical illusion known as theMoiré effect. The camera sensor struggles to process the tight lines, resulting in a strange wavy pattern across your clothes in the final digital image. When in doubt, keep it solid.

3. Dress for Your Industry and Your Target Client

Your clothing should communicate your professional identity.

  • Corporate & Corporate Finance/Legal:You can never go wrong with a well-tailored suit jacket, a crisp button-down shirt, or a structured blazer.

  • Creatives, Tech, and Modern Entrepreneurs:Aim for “smart casual.” Think structured layers, textured knitwear, or a high-quality shirt without a tie.

  • Pro-Tip:Dress for the job you want, but also dress in a way that makes your ideal client feel comfortable doing business with you.

4. Pay Attention to Fit and Tailoring

Professional camera lenses and commercial lighting capture everything—including folds, creases, and ill-fitting fabric. Ensure your clothes are clean, freshly pressed, and fit you comfortably. Jackets that are too tight will pull across the chest when buttoned, and shirts that are too loose can look messy sitting under studio lights.

5. Keep Accessories Simple

Jewelry should enhance your look, not dominate it. Opt for classic, understated pieces like simple studs, delicate necklaces, or a timeless watch. Large, highly reflective statement necklaces or dangling earrings can catch the studio flash and create distracting glares.

The Bottom Line

The best outfit you can wear is one that makes you feel entirely confident. When you feel good, it shows in your expression, your posture, and your eyes.
